ABSTRACT

The promise of a market for news and information service on the Web(NISW) has attracted nearly all forms of media including broadcasters, newspapers, and Internet ventures to a new cross-media competition and coordination. Even if there have been incredible efforts to gain a competitive advantage in the industry, a model of competitive advantage and firm performance still should be established. The present research is the first effort to empirically explore the mechanism of firms competitive advantage and performance in the NISW. Web survey research was used to collect 183 firm data from 81 metropolitan markers in the United Stares.

The present research assumed that the strategy of product differentiation would be more appropriate to drive success in firm performance. A firm's product differentiation strategy including speciality service, advertising and customer service. was positively related to higher market and financial performance. A firm's product quality also had a stronger effects on firm's market and financial performance.

Mainstream theroy has emphasized the first mover advantage in Internet business. However, the results found that a firm's earlier entry into market was not related to higher market and financial performance controlling for market size, competition intensity. There seems to be no pioneer advantage for firm performance in a developing NISW market.

This study contributes to literature on media economics and management. Especially, it elaborated the linkage between market structure and firm performance by analyzing firm's conduct such as the efforts to differentiate product and service, and the time of entry into market. Finally, the results of the present research reflect the early stage of the NISW market. The relationships between market and firm variables may change over time. Therefore future research is needed to examine possible changes over time in relationshhips between firm conduct and performance in NISW industry.
